The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Tamale Central Constituency, Prof. Seidu Mahama Alidu, has filed his nomination with the Electoral Commission (EC) to contest the constituency’s upcoming by-election scheduled for September 30, 2025.
Prof. Alidu, who is a Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, was accompanied by executives and supporters of the party to file his nomination at the EC office in Tamale yesterday.
Unity
Addressing journalists after submitting his nomination, Prof. Alidu paid glowing tribute to the late Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, whose tragic death in a helicopter crash on August 6 create
d the vacancy.
He called on NDC supporters to remain disciplined and respectful in their campaign conduct, stressing that victory for the party would be achieved through unity and clean politics.
“We must be mindful of our words and actions, especially as other contestants join the race. Our strength as a party lies in discipline, mutual respect, and togetherness,” he said.
Prof. Alidu pledged to continue the legacy of the late Dr Murtala while introducing new initiatives
to accelerate development in the constituency. He also assured the constituents of his commitment to championing policies that would address their socio-economic needs when given the nod in the upcoming by-election.
Other Contenders
The Tamale Metro EC Director, Anaba Samson, confirmed that at least four other aspirants, representing the All People’s Congress (APC), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), People’s National Convention (PNC), and an independent candidate, had picked nomination forms.
However, as of yesterday afternoon, they had not yet submitted them.
Primary
Last Saturday, delegates decisively settled on Prof. Seidu Mahama Alidu to lead the party into the upcoming by-election at the parliamentary primary.
In a primary contested by 12 aspirants, Prof. Alidu, who is a Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, secured a landslide victory, polling 840 of the 1,500 valid votes.
The EC has scheduled the by-election for September 30, 2025, to fill the vacuum left by Dr Murtala, who died in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
Dr Murtala, who was also the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, represented Tamale Central on the NDC’s ticket.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not field a candidate.
