Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is calling for stronger grassroots engagement to reconnect with the party’s base and ensure good governance. He believes consistent interaction with constituents is crucial for sustaining good governance and making public policies truly serve the people. Some key points from his recent tour of the Volta Region include :
Reinstitution of Outreach Programs: Nketiah wants to revive the outreach programs that were a hallmark of previous NDC administrations under Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Mahama. These programs allowed government appointees to engage directly with citizens, explain policies, and gather feedback.
Importance of Face-to-Face Interaction: He emphasized that digital communication via social media cannot replace personal contact and face-to-face interactions. Nketiah noted that the party’s past success was due in part to its ability to engage with constituents directly.
Accountability and Transparency: Nketiah stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in governance, encouraging the party to be open to criticism and feedback from constituents.
Building Unity: The tour aims to build unity within the party and strengthen internal structures ahead of the next general elections. Nketiah is committed to being a “field chairman” who stays in touch with the people, rather than an “armchair chairman”.
Education and Community Development: During the tour, Nketiah commended the Member of Parliament for Afadzato South, Frank Afriyie, for investing in education, including donating chop boxes to support students entering senior high schools. Overall, Nketiah’s call for stronger grassroots engagement is about reconnecting with the party’s base, ensuring good governance, and building a stronger, more united party.
