The Volta Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has defended Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa against calls for his dismissal by the Minority in Parliament. The NDC describes the calls as “misguided, poorly informed, and disconnected from prevailing global diplomatic realities”.
The controversy surrounds recent developments in international migration and United States visa policies affecting Ghanaians. The Minority in Parliament demands Ablakwa’s dismissal, citing the government’s failure to protect Ghanaian interests. However, the Volta NDC argues that global debates on immigration and welfare access are not unique to Ghana-US relations, pointing out that countries like Barbados, Brazil, and Nigeria face similar measures.
The NDC highlights Ablakwa’s achievements, including establishing seven new passport application centers, launching same-day passport delivery, and securing a $60 million grant from China. They urge Ghanaians to assess the matter within its proper global context and disregard attempts to politicize complex foreign policy issues.
