The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) is opposing the proposed lithium mining lease agreement between the Government of Ghana and Barari DV Ghana Limited, citing concerns that it’s not in the country’s best interest. The agreement offers Ghana a 5% royalty rate, while Barari DV gets 95%. LPG General Secretary Jerry Owusu Appauh argues this is a “giveaway price” and undermines Ghana’s economic sovereignty.
The party is calling for Parliament to reject the agreement and instead focus on curbing illegal mining activities. They’re also emphasizing the need for Ghana to benefit from its natural resources, with Appauh stating, “Lithium is the gold of the future, and we must ensure it benefits our people and future generations”.
This opposition is part of a broader debate, with other groups like the Minority Caucus, IMANI Africa, and the Coalition for Accountable Resource Governance also expressing concerns about the agreement’s terms and potential impact on Ghana’s interests.
