President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs to upgrade Ho and Hohoe municipalities in the Volta Region to metropolitan status.
This move aims to give the assemblies greater administrative autonomy, enabling quicker policy implementation and improved governance without central government delays.
The upgrade is expected to prioritize road construction, urban transport, sanitation systems, housing, utilities, and urban growth management. Regional Minister James Gunu noted that metropolitan status will attract private investors, create jobs, and increase local revenue.
Ho, with a population of 200,000, and Hohoe, with 150,000 residents, will benefit from larger allocations from Common Funds and development grants.
