Gospel icon Yaw Sarpong has passed away at the age of 66. His manager, Nana Poku Ashis, confirmed the news, stating that he died at Emena Hospital in Kumasi after a prolonged battle with health issues. Yaw Sarpong was a renowned Ghanaian gospel musician and leader of the Asomafoɔ Gospel Band, known for hits like “Awurade Kasa,” “Tie Obiaa,” and “Wo Haw Ne Hwan”. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
Yaw Sarpong’s music career spanned nearly five decades, with his first album “Adesrede” released in 1981. He was also recognized for his humanitarian work, including “The Prison Project” initiative. His passing comes just a month after the death of his longtime colleague and close friend, Maame Tiwaa.
