The Progressive Alliance of Ghana (PAG) is calling for Parliament to reject the government’s revised lithium mining agreement, citing that it’s “not fit for purpose in 2025 Ghana”. They argue the deal gives Ghana only 13% while Barari DV gets 87%, which is unfair.
PAG’s leader, Apostle Dr. John Kpikpi, suggests renegotiating the terms, proposing Ghana gets 85% and Barari DV gets 15%. He emphasizes the need for a more transparent and equitable approach to managing Ghana’s natural resources.
The agreement, laid before Parliament on November 13, 2025, allows Barari DV Ghana Limited to mine lithium and other rare earth minerals at Ewoyaa in the Central Region. However, concerns have been raised about the country’s lack of expertise and the potential environmental impact.
Parliament’s Lands and Natural Resources Committee has opened a two-week public consultation on the agreement, seeking input from stakeholders. The Committee Chairman, Collins Dauda, stated that the proposed 10% royalty rate in the original agreement is unlawful, as Ghana’s law only allows for a 5% royalty rate.
