Ghana’s humanitarian commitment is on full display with the deployment of troops and aid to Jamaica, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. The government has sent 54 army engineers and five medical doctors from the 48th Engineers Regiment to assist with reconstruction efforts, along with GH¢10 million worth of relief items, including food, medication, shelter materials, and water, sanitation, and hygiene equipment.
The aid is apportioned as follows: 50% to Jamaica, 30% to Cuba, and 20% to Sudan, reflecting the immediate needs of each country. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, emphasized that this move reflects Ghana’s tradition of humanitarian leadership and solidarity with countries in need.
President John Mahama described the deployment as a humanitarian duty rooted in shared history and values between Ghana and the Caribbean. The troops will focus on rebuilding critical infrastructure, supporting emergency works, and stabilizing affected communities.
