Ghana’s Parliament has approved a budget of GH¢1.6 billion to finance its operations for the 2026 fiscal year. However, Members of Parliament (MPs) are expressing dissatisfaction, arguing that the allocation is inadequate compared to their original proposal of GH¢4.6 billion.
The approved budget will cover salaries, allowances, goods, and services, as well as committee work, ICT upgrades, and constituency-related activities. Despite the increase from GH¢80 million in 2025 to GH¢300 million in 2026 for capital expenditure, MPs are concerned about the impact on critical projects, such as establishing constituency consultancy offices and repairing facilities like elevators and washrooms.
Some MPs, including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, are advocating for a guaranteed share of national revenue, similar to statutory funds like GETFund and the National Health Insurance Fund, to ensure Parliament’s operational independence.
