For musicians, songwriting is often an art form. However, for gospel artistes, the creative process can be deeply rooted in spiritual inspiration.
Esther Godwyll, the reigning Telecel Ghana Music Awards Female Vocalist of the Year, attributes her songwriting to the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
After winning Best Female Vocal Performance this year, Godwyll shared her testimony about the “supernatural occurrences” that have shaped her life and music career.
She revealed that although she wanted to express her feelings and experiences through music, the inspiration didn’t come until after weeks of meditation and reflection sparked by a sermon from her spiritual father, Rev. Steve Mensah of Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry (CEM)
“I was strongly led to write and compose this song after weeks of meditation and whispers from the Holy Spirit following a message about supernatural occurrences,” she said.
Released on Friday, September 5, Al Tivi is a Hebrew word which means an act beyond the natural or supernatural, celebrating the miraculous, the impossible, and the unexplainable things that happen to people.
She explained that the song is an invitation to step into the realm of the supernatural, where God’s power and love reign supreme.
“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. This is what Matthew 19:26 says and it emphasises the concept of supernatural.
“When you experience the supernatural, you’re left in awestruck mode, and that’s exactly what this song is all about,” she told Graphic Showbiz on Monday, September 8.
Al Tivi was produced by Dr. Casey Alakwa, mixed and mastered by Francis Osei and backed by CEM Choir and David Crentsil.
With a dash of humour, she recalled the anticipation building up to the song’s release, with fans speculating about the meaning of the song’s title.
“I saw captions popping up left and right, ‘Ai TV’, ‘Ai tow Twi’, and ‘Artificial Intelligence Twi’… I love the creativity and mystery, but let’s just say the title is in Hebrew,” she said.
Apart from winning TGMA26 Best Female Vocal Performer, Esther Godwyll has earned Best New Artiste of the Year nomination at 2024 Praise Achievement of the Year, Best Female Vocalist of the Year at 2022 Ghana Music Awards UK and in the same year, she was nominated Most Promising Gospel Artiste at iConic Social Media Lifestyle awards.
