Charles Osei Asibey, Secretary-General of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), is championing women’s control of sports narratives. He believes female sports journalists should take ownership of women’s sports coverage, providing authentic storytelling and depth. Asibey notes that women’s sports receive only 4% of media coverage globally, and Africa’s share is even lower.
He emphasizes that female journalists, with their inherent understanding and empathy, can change this narrative. SWAG, under Asibey’s leadership, has 15% female membership and three women on its executive body, aiming to increase female representation and influence in sports journalism.
Asibey urges media houses to implement policies promoting women’s sports coverage, arguing that Africa’s sports industry growth depends on treating half its population fairly. He identifies cultural, educational, and confidence barriers hindering women in sports journalism, stressing the need for targeted initiatives and mentorship.
