Brahim Diaz is taking full responsibility for missing that crucial penalty in the AFCON final against Senegal. He attempted a Panenka-style shot, but it was easily saved by Senegal’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy. Diaz expressed his regret, saying “My soul hurts” and apologizing to Moroccan fans for the missed opportunity.
The penalty miss came after a chaotic delay, with Senegal’s players walking off the pitch in protest of the penalty award. Morocco’s Royal Football Federation has even announced plans to file a complaint with CAF and FIFA over the incident.
Despite the heartbreak, Diaz finished the tournament as the top scorer with five goals.
