Coco Gauff is speaking out after cameras caught her smashing her racket following her Australian Open loss to Elina Svitolina. She expressed frustration that the moment, meant to be private, was broadcast worldwide. “I tried to go somewhere where they wouldn’t broadcast it, but obviously they did. Maybe some conversations can be had, because I feel like at this tournament the only private place we have is the locker room,” Gauff said.
Gauff explained she didn’t want to vent her emotions on court in front of fans or her team, so she went to a spot she thought was private. The 21-year-old added that she knows she’s emotional and needed to release that frustration. Fellow players Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula echoed Gauff’s concerns, saying players deserve some privacy.
