Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer aspirant, has condemned tribal politics and the “stranger” label given to him by Asante Akim South MP, Kwaku Asante Boateng.
Bawumia described the comment as “dangerous and divisive”, emphasizing that it contradicts the NPP’s tradition of unity and diversity.
He recalled his 17 years of service to the party, including four stints as a running mate and two terms as Vice President, questioning how he could be considered an outsider.
Bawumia urged party members to reject divisive rhetoric and focus on competence and dedication, rather than tribal or regional origins.
He emphasized that the NPP’s strength lies in its diversity, tracing its roots to the United Party, which brought together people from various ethnic groups.
He encouraged supporters to vote for him as a statement against tribal bigotry, saying anyone from any part of Ghana can lead the party if capable.
The NPP national secretariat, Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus, and other party groups have condemned Asante Boateng’s comments, highlighting growing tensions ahead of the party’s flagbearer selection in 2026.
