Baba Jamal, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, has won the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, retaining the seat for his party. He secured 10,884 votes, representing 63% of the total valid votes cast. This victory marks his return to Parliament after nine years, extending the NDC’s hold on the constituency since 1992.
Baba Jamal, a lawyer and former High Commissioner to Nigeria, dedicated his win to his 93-year-old mother and the people of Ayawaso East, promising to “reset the whole constituency” and bring development to the area. His closest contender, Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), obtained 4,009 votes, while independent candidate Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda came third with 1,885 votes.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the sitting MP, Naser Toure Mahama, in January 2026. The election was generally peaceful, with a low voter turnout of 17,048 across 113 polling stations.
