Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has denied reports that he’s seeking safe passage for his cousin and former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta. In a statement, Akufo-Addo’s office called the claims “utterly false” and “total fabrication,” emphasizing that his concern for Ofori-Atta doesn’t extend to interfering with the rule of law.
Akufo-Addo acknowledged his familial ties with Ofori-Atta and appreciated his service as Finance Minister during his two-term presidency. However, he stressed that this doesn’t influence his commitment to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law.
The controversy surrounds Ofori-Atta’s legal troubles, including charges of causing financial loss to the state and corruption-related offenses. Akufo-Addo’s office has demanded that media outlets publishing the claims issue a correction and reproduce the rejoinder in full.
