Mozambique made history with their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) win, defeating Gabon 3-2 in a thrilling Group F match. The Mambas, led by 42-year-old winger Elias Pelembe, secured their maiden victory after 16 attempts, ending a 39-year wait.
Faisal Bangal opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a header from a corner, and Geny Catamo doubled the lead from a penalty spot in the 42nd minute. Despite Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulling one back for Gabon before halftime, Mozambique restored their two-goal cushion with Diogo Calila’s headed goal in the 52nd minute. Alex Moucketou-Moussounda scored Gabon’s second goal in the 76th minute, but Mozambique held on for the win.
This victory puts Mozambique in a strong position to reach the knockout stage for the first time, with three points alongside Cameroon and Ivory Coast in Group F.
