Christian Bassogog is a Cameroonian football sensation who’s truly living his dream. He burst onto the scene at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), earning the Best Player award and leading Cameroon to victory. Now, he’s back for his fifth AFCON, this time as captain, carrying the hopes of his nation.
Bassogog’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Born on October 18, 1995, in Douala, Cameroon, he began his career at second-division side Rainbow FC. He then played for Wilmington Hammerheads, AaB, Henan Jianye, Shanghai Shenhua, Ankaragücü, and currently Al-Okhdood in the Saudi Pro League.
As captain, Bassogog is determined to guide his young team to success. “Being captain is not about myself; it’s about helping my teammates understand that the AFCON is an important competition for Cameroon and for the continent,” he said. “We want to add another star to our jersey”.
Cameroon is in Group F, facing Gabon, defending champions Côte d’Ivoire, and Mozambique. Their campaign kicks off on December 24 against Gabon.
