Egypt and Iran have lodged complaints with FIFA over a World Cup match in Seattle scheduled to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride. The match, set for June 26, 2026, was designated as a “Pride Match” by local organizers before the teams were drawn. Both countries have strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws, with Iran imposing the death penalty for same-sex relations and Egypt prosecuting LGBTQ+ individuals under morality laws.
The Egyptian Football Association sent a letter to FIFA “categorically rejecting any activities related to supporting homosexuality during the match,” citing cultural and religious values. Iran’s Football Federation president, Mehdi Taj, called the Pride celebration “unreasonable and illogical,” saying it signals support for a particular group.
Seattle organizers have refused to back down, stating the event will proceed as planned, with community programming outside the stadium celebrating LGBTQ+ communities. FIFA has declined to comment on the situation.
