Former President John Mahama has urged the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to speed up its investigations and prosecutions, saying it’s premature to call for the office’s closure. Mahama emphasized that the OSP is the only anti-corruption agency with full prosecutorial independence, making it crucial in Ghana’s fight against corruption.
The OSP has faced criticism for its perceived slow pace in delivering results, with some calling for its abolition. However, Mahama believes the office should be given more time to demonstrate its relevance. He noted that public distrust in the Attorney-General’s office, due to its position within the sitting government, makes the OSP’s independence even more critical.
Mahama’s comments come amid growing pressure from senior politicians, including Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who have questioned the OSP’s effectiveness and budget allocation.
