Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei has slammed the Speaker’s decision to refer Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee, calling it “political persecution” and “vindictive prosecution”. She believes the move is an attempt to intimidate and undermine Afenyo-Markin’s leadership, citing the unconstitutional nature of the disputed July 22 resolution.
Appiagyei argues that Afenyo-Markin was simply defending the constitution and Ghana’s international reputation, and his actions were not insubordination. She has called for the immediate withdrawal of the petition against Afenyo-Markin, a public apology from the Speaker and Majority Leader, and an end to alleged state-enabled intimidation.
The controversy stems from Afenyo-Markin’s continued role as a Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, despite a parliamentary resolution attempting to remove him. The ECOWAS Parliament has rebuked Ghana over the incident, and Appiagyei is urging the government to respect Ghana’s international obligations.
