Patricia Appiagyei, Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, emphasizes that inclusive governance is crucial for a stronger democracy. She believes open and inclusive parliaments are essential for Ghana and Africa, promoting responsive and accountable governance.
Appiagyei highlights three key commitments for forward-looking governance:
– Structured Dialogue: Engaging Parliament, CSOs, academia, and community networks to ensure everyone’s voice is heard.
– Gender-Responsive Lawmaking: Institutionalizing laws that address the needs of all citizens, regardless of gender.
– Impactful Legislative Decisions: Ensuring laws positively impact citizens’ lives.
She stresses that parliaments are strongest when they engage with the public, civil society, and development partners, making laws fairer, budgets more equitable, and deepening trust in democracy.
This approach is in line with Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 16, promoting inclusive societies, access to justice, and strong institutions.
