Francis-Xavier Sosu, the Member of Parliament for Madina, has been elected Chairman of the ECOWAS Caucus of the Africa Parliamentary Union (APU). This historic election took place on November 20, 2025, during the 84th Session of the APU Executive Committee in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Sosu, a human rights lawyer, succeeds Mali’s Alioune Gueye, who chaired the caucus for two years. He has pledged to pursue significant reforms within the ECOWAS Caucus over the next two years, focusing on key areas such as:
– Youth Unemployment: Strengthening continental collaboration to address youth unemployment
– Green Economic Transition: Promoting sustainable economic growth and development
– African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA): Harmonizing national laws to support AfCFTA
– Human Rights: Advocating for the abolition of the death penalty, criminalization of witchcraft accusations, and operationalization of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights
Sosu’s election is seen as a testament to Ghana’s growing influence in regional parliamentary circles. He was previously Vice-Chairman of the ECOWAS Caucus and is expected to drive meaningful change in the region.
