The Minority in Parliament is not holding back on the 2026 Budget Statement, calling it “mere lamentations” and “growthless, jobless, and minimalist”. They argue that the budget fails to address Ghana’s urgent economic challenges and lacks transparency in its flagship programs, such as the 24-Hour Economy and the Big Push.
Key Criticisms from the Minority:
– Lack of Job Creation: The budget doesn’t prioritize job creation or economic transformation.
– Unrealistic Revenue Projections: The Minority questions the government’s revenue estimates, citing shortfalls in 2025.
– Fiscal Deception: They accuse the government of masking fiscal weaknesses with “weaponised underspending and accounting cosmetics”.
– Inadequate Funding: Flagship programs, like the 24-Hour Economy, are underfunded, with only GHS110 million allocated.
On the other hand, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, disagrees, stating that the budget reveals the previous government’s poor economic management. He highlights the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy, reduce inflation, and attract better international ratings.
