Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has announced that he will facilitate a briefing by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to address concerns regarding Ghana’s agreement with the United States to accept deportees.
This decision follows a request from the Minority, led by Habib Iddrisu, who questioned the implications of this agreement and its potential link to the reversal of US visa sanctions imposed on Ghana. The US had restricted Ghanaian visa applicants to three-month single-entry visas, citing concerns over visa overstays by Ghanaian nationals.
However, following high-level diplomatic engagements between Ghana and the US government, the sanctions were lifted in September 2025, allowing Ghanaian applicants to be eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas with enhanced consular privileges.
Ayariga commended the Foreign Affairs Minister for securing the visa sanction reversal, describing it as a significant achievement that would benefit Ghanaians with family ties in the US and businesses engaged in US-Ghana trade.
He also clarified that under ECOWAS protocol, citizens of member states have the right to enter Ghana and stay for up to 90 days without requiring a specific agreement with the US government .
